New research indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a intense return of appetite.
"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural support.
